Jazz in Newport

Somewhere on the coast of Rhode Island, seven friends found 14 hours of incredible music, top notch oysters, and The Roots.  This weekend was hard to beat.

The Newport Jazz Festival is a three day long music fest filled with hours of smooth, silky jazz music played by artists from all over the world. This year, we headed up to Newport, RI for two of the three days, but I wish we saw all three! Every artist, whether they were extremely well known or a total unknown, was an expert jazz musician. If you ever head over for the festival, prepare yourself for some of the best live playing you have ever heard.   My jaw was on the floor ninety percent of the time.

Located in the middle of historic Fort Adams, this music festival not only includes numerous different stages throughout the park, but it also offers beautiful views of the Newport Harbor as you walk from act to act. I would recommend bringing a big cozy blanket to lay on and a few lawn chairs and setting them up at the main stage (Fort Stage) when you arrive in the morning. This way, you have a comfortable area staked out for the big acts later in the day. We set up for Snarky Puppy on Saturday and The Roots on Sunday. Both acts were unreal.

If you want to attend the Jazz Festival next year, make sure to book a hotel a few months in advance. Parking in Newport is tough, and anything within walking distance to the show was totally filled up when we began looking for places to stay. Prices also go up exponentially as it gets closer to the dates of the festival, so book early!

Last but not least, wear your best dancing attire! You will be doing a ton of walking, both from the parking lot to the venue and throughout the venue itself. Comfortable shoes are a must. I opted for booties on Saturday and chunky mules on Sunday. If you don't like walking in heels, then try a cute pair of embroidered sneakers. My favorite piece of the weekend, however, were these Zara pants lined with fringe. They're definitely the best pair of dancing pants I own.

Happy Shopping!
